During the hydrostatic pressure testing according to ISO 1167 and ASTM D 1598, plastic pipes and fittings are tested for their most important property – the determination of the resistance
to internal pressure at different temperatures.
During this test the specimens are filled with water and set under a static internal pressure, provided by a pressure water supply / control unit. Depending on the material and test requirements of the corresponding product standard, this test is carried out at test temperatures between 20°C and 95°C.
The internal pressure test according to ISO 1167 and ASTM D 1598 can be carried out within both, medium air (test oven) and medium water (test bath with water). It is important that the test temperature is maintained continuously in accordance with the standard.
PROEMTEC offers for this test a wide range of complete and flexible solutions with different pressure ranges. The customer has the possibility to configure the test unit individually acc. to the required test pressure, the pressure range, the material of specimens, the maximum diameter of the pipe, number of independent test stations and the required test temperatures, so that the unit meets the individual needs of the customer.
Do you prefer a combined unit that also performs the burst pressure test acc. to ASTM D 1599 (Standard Test Method for Resistance to Short-Time Hydraulic Pressure of Plastic Pipe, Tubing, and Fittings)?
Thanks to our many years of experience in the field of special plant construction, we are also able to offer different pressure ranges up to 1000 bar combined in one test system without any problems.
We would be pleased to prepare a quotation for you that meets all your individual needs and requirements. Feel free to contact us and benefit from our many years of cross-industry experience.

Your questions about hydrostatic pressure testing
Is the service life of polyethylene pipes reduced by internal pressure testing?
No, the hydrostatic pressure test is a type test. That means that not all produced products have to tested but only some samples from each charge. The test specimens are tested for qualification according to the DIN or ASTM standards (ISO 1167 / ASTM D 1598) relating to the pipes. The software supplied with PROEMTEC equipment makes it easy to create the documents required for certification after successful testing.
How exactly do you have to proceed for the leak/pressure test and which device and which medium (air/water) do you choose?
In the tests, you have to differ between the leak test and the pressure test. In the case of leak testing, the still permissible leak rate is also decisive for the selection of the test method. The tightness test of pipes should be performed with a gas such as air or with a test gas (helium). PROEMTEC offers a wide range of leakage test units that can detect leak rates of up to 10-6 mbar*l/s. During these tests, the specimens are tested in an evacuated test chamber. At lower leak rates, the specimen can be tested with a leak detector. The specimen is closed at both ends and connected to the tester. The device displays the leak rate during the test. This test can also be carried out on pipes that have already been installed.
The pressure test of pipes checks the strength of a pipe at a previously selected pressure. For safety reasons, this test is mainly carried out with a liquid test medium such as water. This test can also be performed on installed pipes. However, it makes more sense to qualify the pipes with an internal hydrostatic pressure test. Pipes certified according to ISO 1167 / ASTM D 1598 can be installed without further pressure testing in applications for which the pipes are qualified. The hydrostatic pressure test is an endurance test. For the test, several test specimens are closed with end closures, connected to the test system with hoses and hung in a temperature-controlled test tank. After that the test specimens are filled with water and vented. The test specimens are then set under a test pressure – depending on the test specimen. The temperature and the test pressure, as well as the test duration are recorded by the test system. Very often, the test is carried out until the test object leaks. PROEMTEC test systems can be used for this testing. Upon request, PROEMTEC manufactures testing systems for almost all types of pipes on the market. For safety reasons, mainly water is used as test medium. PROEMTEC also offers customized systems for gases and test oils. Concerning the test units with oil, PROEMTEC can also offer systems for the test oil Skydrol, which is used in the aerospace industry. If the hydrostatic pressure test is to be carried out with air, the test specimens must be tested in a test oven.
What is the main area of application of creep internal pressure testing?
Hydrostatic pressure tests are mainly used for the certification of plastic pipes and fittings. The testing of composite pipes is also possible. PROEMTEC offers suitable test systems for all test methods. For special materials such as fiber composites, PROEMTEC can also offer systems for the use of test oils instead of water as test medium.
